Mercruiser Cone Clutch

Friend of mine has a boat with 700 hrs on it and is having issues with delays going into fwd and reverse. From everything I have read, this means the cone clutchs are shined up and slick as he has already had the linkage adjusted. Has anyone lapped their clutches vs replacing? Ive seen several youtube videos where this is an option compared to replacement. Just wanted to know your thoughts? I am going to repair his for the experience as I know mine will probably need it in the near future.

I am cresting 2,000 hrs. and have never had an issue with my 1985 alpha 1 slipping.
You have to engage them quickly, or they will chatter.

Yes my 2001 196 SS had an alpha 1 and it was the same way. I forgot to mention my friends drive is an Bravo 3.

Apologies for the old response to this thread. My experience with Mercuiser Cone Clutch, is that if you don't use Mercuiser or Quicksilver High Perfomance gear fluid the Cone clutch will fail. Apparently the Performance version of the fluid has a friction modifier which is needed for the clutch.

I guess they go bad. My boat has DTS and I was having a delay on the port engine when backing into my slip. My mercuiser mechanic who I fully trust pulled the drive and showed me the bad clutch. The drives had under 100 hours on it. My mechanic was pretty sure the wrong gear fluid was used. Needless to say, we changed the fluid in the starboard drive.
