Impeller

Good evening, recently purchased a 99 234 5.7 merc. Don’t know what happened but, I changed the impeller that was definitely due. Anyhow a new housing n impeller. Put it together n it’s not pumping water. The intake n discharge hoses were correct. New plate n o rings n impeller set in correct direction

It pumped fine on the muffs prior to the change. Needless to say I smoked the new impeller n housing.

I ordered a stainless housing n kit.

What do you suppose could have gone wrong?

Thnx

Wondering if the impeller was in a bind in the old housing. Don't know how you could verify one way or the other.
I upgraded to stainless steel housing for my sea water pump and it has worked out great.
Good luck figuring this out and getting back on the water.

I don’t think it was bound up because it was pumping, but because the impeller n housing were in bad shape I replaced both.

I attached a pic of the new impeller. I did order the stainless housing and kit. I’m cleaning all the water lines out now.

This blows

I see what you mean. Really tore up. Hoping one of the other members will pop in with an idea or two.

If you checked the hoses for clogs/damage, the other areas I would look at are debris like weeds or dirt are blocking the flow of water to the pump (intake grate); a faulty impeller itself even though it was new/installed correctly, or a blockage within the water pump housing or engine cooling system. stuck thermostat.

I am trying to sort this out in this old man's mind, so please bare with me.
Was it working on the muffs with the old impeller?
After you put in the new impeller did you run it on the muffs, if so, did it pump?

Good morning, yes it ran on the muffs with the old impeller. I had the intake hooked up correctly but it wasn’t sucking water. I had one guy tell me the intake hose went on top hole, so I tried it, well that was wrong. In doing research the RH is the intake, the bottom line. The new impeller didn’t pump. So I took off all hose to clean them out. Now I need to take remove the intake hose and clean it because I can see some pieces in the hose with my camera scope. I’m sure they got in there when I reversed the lines.

Talking with a mechanic he suggests putting a little grease or glycerin in the new impeller, then turning the water on slowly just until the water starts coming out of the muffs. He said unless there is an air leak, it should suck that water suck in right away. If not look for an air leak.

I did notice some oil coming from the prop, hoping it’s a prop seal, not the exhaust hub to gear case sealing the two 1/2’s. Both of those are going to be changed anyway, but I’m not certain if that can cause an air leak.

When I put in the new impeller I had the water on pretty high, so I’m hoping that was my problem. If so i caused myself a lot of extra work. I hoping to receive the new stainless housing Monday, this week I’ll break my knuckles and smack my noggin a few times taking the intake line out….LOL..

Thank you for your responses, any ideas please let me know.

Gweedo,

Talk about lost being in the 60's. I could not figure out what 2 hoses you were talking about, mine doesn't have any. So off to my trusty old friend, Youtube, and found this. One thing that I have learned over the years of my many do overs, is to research the unknown, and you never can take too many pictures. This and other videos would be my first step, along with before, during, and after pictures.
I know my 350 and Alpha 1, I don't have a clue about yours. Is it possible that some of the impeller could get stuck in your thermostat?
Your love affair and adventures into the unknown are just beginning with her. Be safe and calm waters.

Thnx for the reply, I mentioned in the first post what I was working on. I replaced the thermostat, problem is not getting any water in to begin with. I did a bunch of research , I’ll check out the above links. The last hose to remove n clean is the intake. I’m thinking it’s sucking air from somewhere. I’ll see what happens when I install the new stainless impeller housing next week. Thnx again
