Boating License

I forgot, but it really did not seem to be all that much, considering the job it does. Trying to retrieve 100 ft of anchor road in 2 ft waves is no fun at any age. It has made boating and anchoring posible and safer for me. When I get over to visit with my girl, I check it out and let you know.
I highly suggest a windless. With out one, I would suggest ether a cam cleat or clam cleat. In rough waters, when the bow goes down, pull the line/rode up. With the rode in the cleat, as the boat goes up the cleat will take the load. Not you, which would try to pull you over the bow.

My solution is not even bother going out in 2 foot waves [with my size boat anyways]. But a clam cleat would definitely make it easier.

I agree. But I have gone out and the weather can turn on you.

Rule of thumb. you get a blast of cold air, you have about 20 minutes to run and hide.

Weather tuns on you? In Lake Erie? Never happen! hahaha

In all seriousness, I try to make my own forecast and anticipate when Lake Erie is going to turn. Then I'll decide "weather" to go out or not BEFORE it's too late.

It's the pilot/aviation thing that's in me. I kinda operate my boat similar to how I use to fly. ALWAYS checking the weather among other things.

Not to debate the point. I have gone on on beautiful days and I never forget one 4th of July night. On the return trips, we hit fog. On the first time, my wife said "I am buying the boat radar" and she did. In the fog I had follow my GPS trail back doing 6 to 7 knots to avoid lobster traps. Also other boats.

Another time, we got caught in a thunder storm. Here in the N. East. theses storms only least for 5 to 10 minutes, but can get rough. At times they are unpredictable. This is New England, as the saying goes . "Wait a few minutes and the weather will change."

Just be safe out there. Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald, all hands when down.

N.W. Ohio has the same saying, it is also known as (lake effect).
