Mercruiser Cone Clutch

Friend of mine has a boat with 700 hrs on it and is having issues with delays going into fwd and reverse. From everything I have read, this means the cone clutchs are shined up and slick as he has already had the linkage adjusted. Has anyone lapped their clutches vs replacing? Ive seen several youtube videos where this is an option compared to replacement. Just wanted to know your thoughts? I am going to repair his for the experience as I know mine will probably need it in the near future.

I am cresting 2,000 hrs. and have never had an issue with my 1985 alpha 1 slipping.
You have to engage them quickly, or they will chatter.
