Fire at Wisdom Dock on Dale Hollow destroys six houseboats

A fire that was discovered late Tuesday night, December 14, resulted in the total loss of at least six houseboats moored at Wisdom Dock on Dale Hollow Lake in Clinton County.

According to one witness at the scene Wednesday morning, the fire was reported to Clinton County 911 dispatch at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In addition to the six houseboats that were a total loss as a result of the fire, all of the personal belongings that were inside the boats were also destroyed by the flames.

The six houseboats were a mix of privately owned houseboats and marina rental fleet houseboats that were moored together near the end of the dock that is to the west of the marina store at Wisdom Dock. At least one PWC that was known to be attached to one of the houseboats involved in the fire was also destroyed.

By early Tuesday morning, with four of the burned hulls still floating at the dock, two of the hulls had already sunk. Other houseboats that were in the immediate area of the fire were successfully moved before becoming involved in the flames.

The frigid weather that has hit the area in the past several days, sending temperatures into the single digits, hampered efforts to move more boats as the ropes used to moor the houseboats were frozen stiff in many cases, making untying impossible.

The Albany Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call Tuesday night, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was expected to arrive on the scene sometime Wednesday to begin an investigation into the blaze.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The dock is located about five miles west of Albany on Hwy. 553.
