It`s time to grease the steering cable on your boat.
Extend the shaft all the way, grab a hadfull of grease , and apply to the shaft while someone turns the wheel the other way.Two or three times should do it. It should be done at the end of the season to insure a free steering system. Unless of course you like to spend 300 or so replacing a perfectly good cable,or it would have been still good IF YOU GREASED IT.

Do they corrode much up inside the sheath of the cable? If they do, do any spray lubes help out there?

Not so much in the sheath but where they go thru the guide tube. I do about 4 cable`s a year because of it.But one boat still has the factory original and thats got to be 20 years old.Gets greased once a month.
