If you have a late model unit that does not have the upper fitting to lube the steering shaft and seal ,that could cause you to have water leakage coming in around the steering arm area .one can be added very simply.
Will have some pics shortly but all you do is:
Grind a flat area 1/4 in wide in the housing where the casting seam is for the steering pin.
drill and tap for a grease fitting, then redrill (SLOWLY)with a 1/16 th bit thru the housing and thru the brass sleeve avoiding going into the steel pin.You DON`T want to break a drill bit here.
install fitting and grease as usual.
If you do have this type of leak , the transom housing needs to be removed and taken apart to correctly do the repair.
