ARUNDEL, Maine — Students at The Landing School in Arundel, Maine, soon will have the ability to earn an associate’s degree, it reported in a recent statement.
A legislative bill that gives The Landing School authority to grant degrees was signed into law by Governor John Baldacci on March 31. With the legislature’s endorsement, The Landing School is now proceeding with national accreditation for a two-year curriculum in the Marine Systems Program that includes advanced topics in electronics, refrigeration, electricity and industry software, it reported. Combined with some general elective courses — composition, math, science, art and communications — the program of study will culminate with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Marine Systems Technology.
“The current overwhelming demand for educated, certified marine systems technicians is the stimulus for The School’s new growth,” it stated. “An abundance of lucrative professional opportunities exist for innovative technicians with well-rounded business and technical sense.”
“The advances being made in marine systems technology every day are extraordinary,” said Barry Acker, president of The Landing School. “Our Associate’s Degree program will produce systems technicians who will be able to understand and further develop emerging technologies.”
The Landing School’s current 10-month Marine Systems Program will not be affected by the Associate’s Degree program, it added.
